Newlyweds David and Elizabeth Connelly face parental disapproval due to their rushed marriage and Elizabeth's pregnancy. Stranded by a broken-down car near the Everglades, they take refuge in a shack, unaware that the water is poisonous. Despite giving birth, both succumb to the contaminated water. The Man-Thing, drawn by the baby's cries, spares and carries the child into the swamp. The couple's parents, overcoming their differences, search for their children. Discovering the bodies, they find the baby with the Man-Thing. Misinterpreting the situation, they attack, succumbing to fear, prompting the Man-Thing to defend itself by eliminating them. David's father, realizing the baby's cure, takes it, and the Man-Thing returns to the swamp without emotional stimuli.
